COMPARISON|MACMONEY vs THE ALTERNATIVES

How MacMoney compares

Three apps come up most often when a household is choosing where to keep its finances: Monarch Money, Moneyspire and YNAB. Here is where MacMoney is genuinely different — and, further down, where each of the others is the better buy.

The Three That Matter

What none of the others do at all

Insurance and estate, in the same app

Policies, beneficiaries, wills, powers of attorney and healthcare directives sit alongside your accounts. MacMoney works out the coverage you would need, credits what you already hold, and tells you the gap in dollars. No budgeting app does this, because it is an insurance question rather than a software one.

An assessment, not a dashboard

Answer six short steps and MacMoney writes an assessment across 72 topics — the Social Security gap if you retire early, the Medicare bridge to 65, what required distributions at 73 will do to your bracket, which balance to attack first and what it saves. Every figure is your own, not an average.

A person on the other end

When the checkup finds something worth a second opinion, one click reaches a licensed advisor at Lonestar Business Advisors & Insurance in Carrollton, Texas — with your numbers already in hand. A software company cannot add this to a release.

The Honest Part

Where each of them beats us

A comparison where one product wins every row is an advertisement. These are the cases where you should buy the other one, and we would rather you knew now than after you paid.

Monarch Money

Your balances update themselves and a partner can share the household ledger itself. If what you want is to open an app and see today's figures without recording anything, MacMoney cannot do that and is not trying to.

Moneyspire

One payment, and it runs on Windows and Linux as well as the Mac, with check printing. Past about eighteen months it costs less than we do. If you are not on a Mac, this is your answer, not ours.

YNAB

The best envelope budgeting anywhere, with the method, the teaching and the community built around it. If assigning every dollar is the whole reason you are shopping, YNAB does it better than we do — we do it alongside everything else.

Try It

Thirty days, no card, nothing to cancel if you walk away

MacMoney is free for 30 days and then $39.99 a year. If you stop paying it opens read-only — you can still read, back up and export everything you entered, because your records are yours.
